Ottawa Basement Tour: Projector Out, MicroLED In with Sonics Plus

I’m in Ottawa with Mario from Sonics Plus Technologies in a basement that used to be a classic projector cave—acoustically transparent screen, ceiling throw, lights-off only. The homeowner asked for a Just Video Walls display. What they got is a multipurpose room that finally matches how families actually use a basement.

Why the projector had to go

Table tennis, pool, two or three games at once, movies—none of that loves a dark room. MicroLED keeps full brightness with the lights on and still splits into multiview. Cabinetry was cut back and the wall rebuilt so the display recesses cleanly instead of protruding like a panel.

Audio when you lose the AT screen

Hard surface walls kill the old “speakers behind the screen” trick. Sonics Plus partnered with Sonance/James on a custom ~143″ three-section soundbar with wide-dispersion tweeters, Anthem on the backend, existing rears, and an in-wall sub—sound from the front of the room, not raining from the ceiling.

6×5 cabinets, MX40, Control4

It’s a 6×5 cabinet wall—easy to misread as 16:9 until you’re in the room. Signal path includes Apple TV through MadVR into an MX40/Novastar stack. Control4 keeps source picks as simple as a normal TV. Mario’s rule on resolution matches ours: sell viewing distance and pitch, not brochure 8K.

Install craft took days on site plus a week of prep for drywall and millwork after the projector came out. The homeowner already lined up a second wall in another home—that’s the review that matters.
